Anti-Parasite

  • Fleas & Ticks

    Quick Flea Kill

    Nitenpyram (Capstar)

    • Form: Oral liquid or single pill
    • Dose: 0.25 ml  or one pill for cats 2–25 lbs
    • What it does: Kills adult fleas quickly (works immediately)
    • Repeat: May repeat in 24 hours if needed
    • Note: First dose kills active fleas; second dose helps eliminate newly hatched fleas

     

    Monthly Flea & Tick Prevention

     

    Selamectin (Revolution Plus, Stronghold Plus, Selarid)

    • Form: Topical
    • Application: 1 vial/size appropriate dose on the back of the neck 
    • What it does: Treats:
      • Fleas
      • Ticks
      • Roundworms
      • Hookworms
    • Repeat: Monthly as needed
    • NOTE: Also, if given this, it can also serve as one of the dewormer doses in adults

    Deworming

    Pyrantel Pamoate

    • Form: Oral liquid
    • Dose: .5ml /10 lbs -repeat every 2 weeks until 8 weeks
    • Treats:
      • Roundworms
      • Hookworms
    • Advantages:
      • Safe for kittens over 2 weeks
      • Inexpensive

    Drontal  -Adults Only

    • Form:  Oral Tablet  
    • Dose:
    •   Repeat in 2 weeks
    • Treats:
      • Roundworms
      • Hookworms
      • Tapeworms
      • Whipworms

    Clean Sweep + Praziquantel   – Kittens (can be used for adults also)

    • Form: Both Oral Liquids
    • Dose:  .5ml x 1 lb. Repeat in 2 weeks
    • Treats: All worm types
    • Note: Less expensive liquid alternative to Drontal

    Intestinal Parasites

    Fenbendazole (Panacur, Safe-Guard)

    • Form: Oral Liquid
    • Dose: 1 ml x 5 lbs, 1 x a day for 5 days
    • Treats:
      • Roundworms
      • Hookworms
      • Whipworms
      • Some tapeworms
      • Giardia

    Metronidazole

    • Form: Oral Liquid
    • Dose: 1.5 ml per 5 lbs 1 x a day for 5 days (can split dose to 2 x a day)
    • Treats: Giardia
    • Note: Often used together with Fenbendazole for Giardia infections

    Sulfadimethoxine (Albon /All Gone)

    • Form: Oral Liquid
    • Dose:  .5ml per 1lb once, then .25ml per 1 lb, 1 x a day for 3-5 days
    • Treats: Coccidia

    Ponazuril / Toltrazuril

    • Form: Oral
    • Dose: .1ml per 1 lb, once a day for 3 days, repeat course a week later  
    • Treats: Coccidia
    • **Note: Dose may vary based on medication strength. This is the standard dose for 10%
